GOP Strategy for victory in '08: Divide and Conquer

"Will history trump the polls? It will if, as in the past, the Democratic Party so wounds itself fighting the war against the war, it nominates a candidate beloved by a minority but mistrusted by a majority. It has happened before."

Richard Cohen points to 1972 (and 2004) as the template for success in 2008 for the GOP. He says that Nixon painted McGovern as a sissy and that Bush painted Kerry as a liar. Will the Dems' votes against funding the war isolate them from the majority of Americans and show the party as weak on national security and foreign policy? While we all know they are, these votes may provide the proof.
