"Relatives of five members of the N.C. Legislative Black Caucus received scholarships from its nonprofit foundation in 2005 and 2006."
"Rep. Beverly Earle, a Charlotte Democrat ... questioned why the black caucus foundation was coming under such scrutiny, saying no other non-profit had been pressured to disclose such information. 'I don't know why the caucus is under attack,' she said."
"He wasn't a real good football player because he liked to have fun and didn't take it that serious,' said Garner Ezell, 74, a former assistant coach for the team. 'He was popular and he liked attention, and would do things to get it.'
In one incident recalled by Ezell and others, Thompson appeared to be injured during a game. The coach ran out to see if he was all right and a smiling Thompson greeted him by asking, 'How's the crowd taking it?'"
A candidate who doesn't take himseld to seriously? and who can handle pressure? I like it!
"The Senate drove a stake Thursday through President Bush's plan to legalize millions of unlawful immigrants, likely postponing major action on immigration until after the 2008 elections."
It's good that amnesty got booted, but the Senate wrote a blank check to illegals if they don't plan to do anything until 2008! If everybody is on board with increasing border security, why don't we do that first?!?! Then, we can get to the visa program, the health inspection program, the round-'em-up and send-'em-home program, and all the other government programs. Talk about a "Do Nothing" Congress -- the Dems don't just do nothing, they tell you they aren't doing anything and give you a timeline for when they might start doing nothing in the future!
Burr attacks seem unfounded. North Carolina is well served by both Senator Dole (who wants border security first) and Burr (who wants to give this bill [and the Senate] a chance to come up with a strong bill that won't give amnesty to illegals. I especially like Burr's stance on protecting the homeland from foreign disease. He has a lot of requirements to earn his support, I doubt Ted Kennedy and Harry Reid can deilver.
This is an excellent comeback by Coulter. She does make some insightful remarks about the '08 race and the issues that will affect tha race. GWB = FDR? Not sure. Nobody is as bad as FDR on domestic policy. Truman could have used his foreign policy as domestic policy and not done as much harm as FDR.
This book runs against everything we've ever heard about the industrial reveloution. I think thats why I like it. The ideas make sense, and they are supported by actual fact, unlike the ramblings of every history teacher I ever had.
The Honorable Tom Harkin 731 Hart Senate Office Building Phone (202) 224 325 Washington DC , 20510
Dear Senator Harkin,
As a native Iowan and excellent customer of the Internal Revenue Service, I am writing to ask for your assistance. I have contacted the Department of Homeland Security in an effort to determine the process for becoming an illegal alien and they referred me to you.
My primary reason for wishing to change my status from U.S. Citizen to illegal alien stems from the bill which was recently passed by the Senate and for which you voted. If my understanding of this bill's provisions is accurate, as an illegal alien who has been in the United States for five years, all I need to do to become a citizen is to pay a $2,000 fine and income taxes for three of the last five years. I know a good deal when I see one and I am anxious to get the process started before everyone figures it out.
Simply put, those of us who have been here legally have had to pay taxes every year so I'm excited about the prospect of avoiding two years of taxes in return for paying a $2,000 fine. Is there any way that I can apply to be illegal retroactively? This would yield an excellent result for me and my family because we paid heavy taxes in 2004 and 2005.
Additionally, as an illegal alien I could begin using the local emergency room as my primary health care provider. Once I have stopped paying premiums for medical insurance, my accountant figures I could save almost $10,000 a year.
Another benefit in gaining illegal status would be that my daughter would receive preferential treatment relative to her law school applications, as well as 'in-state' tuition rates for many colleges throughout the United States for my son.
Lastly, I understand that illegal status would relieve me of the burden of renewing my driver's license and making those burdensome car insurance premiums. This is very important to me given that I still have college age children driving my car.
If you would provide me with an outline of the process to become illegal (retroactively if possible) and copies of the necessary forms, I would be most appreciative.
Thank you for your assistance.
Your Loyal Constituent, Donald Ruppert Burlington , IA
Spain is dealing with illegal immigration from west Africa. Now instead of throwing open the doors or causing a mass rush by saying everyone who is here by next Tuesday is granted amnesty, Spainish businesses have begun recruiting directly, within Senegal, and securing visas and transportation for new hires. These efforts, combined with a stepped up effort in patrolling the seas to catch illegals have resulted in a 2/3 drop in illegal immigration.
Isn't it amazing what happens when laws already on the books are enforced and the free market is allowed to function?
"Will history trump the polls? It will if, as in the past, the Democratic Party so wounds itself fighting the war against the war, it nominates a candidate beloved by a minority but mistrusted by a majority. It has happened before."
Richard Cohen points to 1972 (and 2004) as the template for success in 2008 for the GOP. He says that Nixon painted McGovern as a sissy and that Bush painted Kerry as a liar. Will the Dems' votes against funding the war isolate them from the majority of Americans and show the party as weak on national security and foreign policy? While we all know they are, these votes may provide the proof.
Mr. Chavez remains convinced that the US government is determined to oust him from power. Apparently he is unaware that he is not Fidel Castro, and that it is, in fact, not 1963. In order to ensure peace Mr. Chavez blew $1.5 billion on Russian military hardware, including helicopters, fighter jets, and small arms. I'm sure that money certainly would not have aided his impoverished people, and that his decision to close down opposition media was actually due to "US dirty tricks".
The National Health Service in the UK is denying drugs to Alzheimer's victims because the drugs "cost too much." It's amazing how circumventing the free market doesn't lower prices and leads to more suffering.
"'Unfortunately,' Rodriguez says, 'for many of the minority students, they don't come to school with the values that would allow them to be successful in this type of environment.'"
This article details the disproportionate nature of student discipline referrals. One gem of insight from a random statistician was: "It found that students sent to alternative schools are five times more likely to drop out - and they're more likely to end up in prison."
That's a shocker! Students who get in trouble so much that they get suspended and placed in alternative schools to prevent them from injuring other students or preventing teachers from doing their jobs are more likely to drop out and go to prison. Truly, a revelation that needed diligent study and analysis!
Rep. Brad Miller (D-NC13th) will not challenge NC Senator Elizabeth Dole in 2008.
Add Miller to the list (which includes Governor Easley, Attorney General Cooper, Treasurer Moore, and Lt. Gov. Purdue) of Democrats who won't challenge Senator Dole.
"A source close to the campaign planning tells WSMV that that Thompson planned to announce his candidacy on the steps of the historic Fall School Building Tuesday, but Thompson campaign officials deny that Tuesday's announcement is an official run for the White House."
"In 2001, New York Times columnist William Safire wrote Thompson to ask what he had meant when he said 'the ox is in the ditch' when it comes to postal reform. 'Once again, you remind me that the rest of the country doesn't necessarily use the same phrases as a country boy from Tennessee,' Thompson replied, confessing he'd actually never seen an ox in a ditch--or frankly, an ox. 'As usual, I have no idea where this comes from. All I know is that when the ox is in the ditch, it is a very serious matter--very serious. A big ox, a small ditch, a big load and a hot day--well, you can see the problem.'"
"'If you look back at George Bush's loss in 2000 (in the New Hampshire primary), you can trace it back to his decision to blow off the Dartmouth College debate in the fall of 1999. That sent a message that he didn't believe he had to do all the things that the others were doing.'"
According to this crowd, Romney is using McCain's strategy from 2000. Didn't that end up yielding an embarassing loss to President Bush? I am concerned when someone repeats a winning strategy, but a losing strategy? I am confused.
The BBC has been accused of a liberal bias (big shock!) and for stifling debate on important issues like immigration and global warming. An independent reivew also found that rampant political correctness was negatively impacting news coverage and entertainment.
"Research in the review also found that even ethnic minorities felt that political correctness had gone to far and others said it was diluting comedy and entertainment at the broadcaster and complained of a 'restrictive mind-set'."
"Fred Thompson, the actor and former Tennessee senator who is expected to announce next month he is running for president, flew to London on Monday to meet Margaret Thatcher and deliver a foreign policy speech."
Former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani holds first place in the survey, with support from 27% of the Republicans and independents who said they plan to vote in the party's 2008 primaries. But Thompson, an actor who played a prosecutor on NBC's "Law & Order," runs just behind, with 21%. Indications are he will join the race within the next month.
Rumor has been circulating, but now there seems to be some confirmation - here comes G.I. Joe as a live-action feature! Combine that with Transformer, Thundercats, and He-Man, and the 80's are going to be back in full swing!
"Mary Matalin, the former counselor to Vice President Cheney, says she will be advising Thompson. A campaign source says she will be an unpaid adviser. Matalin is friends with Thompson and his wife, Jeri, and her involvement began informally, the source says."
